Carl Ryan Profile
Carl has been a freelance climbing photographer for over 16 years and has contributed many significant action images to climbing magazines, books, guides, posters, brochures and websites, although he is rarely to be found at the centre of the sport. Carl prefers to shoot climbing action as it happens and has captured many notable and historical first ascents in this way, particularly in Pembrokeshire, one of his most favoured hunting grounds. He holds a database of over 37,000 slides and 17,000 mono stock images of climbers and has the biggest archive of climbing photos in the UK, on Pembrokeshire and South Wales.
A former Detective Sergeant with 30 years experience in CID work, Carl now has his own business as a professional photographer specialising in Covert Surveillance, Forensic, Investigative, Legal and Defence Crime Work photography, as well as undertaking regular photographic commission work for various detective agencies, legal bodies, police forces, firefighting organisations and the security industry throughout the UK. He has covered every type of assignment, including several murders, suspicious deaths, fatal road accidents, serious assaults, police complaints, deaths in police cells, child abuse, theft and drugs in the work place, personal injuries, industrial fraud and high value compensation claims. Carl's dedication and commitment to this type of specilaised work seriously restricts his ability to do more climbing photography, particularly at other climbing locations in the UK and abroad. However, when the opportunity arises to shoot climbers, he takes full advantage of it.
